Standing Firm: Resisting the Spirits Attacking Your Marriage

God revealed a diabolic attack taking place against marriage today. In a dream while preparing to speak at a conference on marriage, three evil spirits appeared to stop me from speaking. I heard the name of the spirits but in an unfamiliar language. When I awoke and prayed about the dream, the Holy showed me the three spirits at work. The three unclean spirits actively working against the sacred union of husband and wife: the spirit of whoredoms, the spirit of confusion, and the spirit of slothfulness [01:12, 01:46]. These are not mere concepts but active forces we must recognize and resist.

The Lure of Whoredoms

The first adversary, the spirit of whoredoms, seeks to defile the marriage bed through the insidious lure of adultery and sexual perversion [03:01]. It tempts and draws individuals away from faithfulness, seeking to break the covenant bond. But take heart! As believers, we are not powerless. We can stand against this spirit by wholeheartedly submitting ourselves to the Word of God and consciously avoiding situations that fan the flames of lust [05:15].

Flirting with others through social media, being alone with the opposite sex, sending inappropriate text messages are all situations that can open the door to infidelity. Let us avoid these situations. Purity is a choice, fortified by God's grace.

The Chaos of Confusion

Next, the spirit of confusion brings strife, bitterness, and unforgiveness into the home, creating an atmosphere of conflict [07:19]. Holding on to bitterness and anger with one’s spouse opens the door to confusion in the home. The enemy wants constant arguments, mistrust, and conflict between husband and wife. However, if we settle disagreements quickly we can overcome this spirit. Be willing to say “I’m sorry”, and do what’s necessary to keep the peace.

This spirit thrives where God's intended order is neglected, particularly when husbands and wives step outside their divinely appointed roles, leading to disorder and turmoil [10:26]. For example, husbands are leaders of the home, and the wife manages the home. If the husband fails to lead, it burdens the wife with responsibilities beyonds her home. Inevitably, in such a situation, conflict will rise as the wife would need to juggle extra responsibilities. She will be frustrated with her husband, while her husband may feel his wife is neglecting the home. But the  man’s reluctance to fulfill his role creates a confusing situation in the home.

Restoring peace requires addressing root issues like bitterness and embracing God's design for family harmony. Husbands should fulfill their roles to lead, provide, and love his wife. The wife’s role is to manage the home, follow her husband’s lead, and support her husband. Keeping these biblical roles reduces competition between husband and wife and maximizes the potential for peace.

The Deadlock of Slothfulness

Imagine the husband that watches TV or play video games all day without any income. Think of the couple that fights over small issues and make no effort to improve their marriage; they entertain divorce over insignificant conflicts. This is slothfulness. The spirit of slothfulness attacks the vitality of marriage through laziness and apathy [13:03]. It manifests as a reluctance to fulfill marital duties, a tendency to give up when challenges arise, and a general neglect of the effort required to nurture the relationship. We are called to fight for our marriages, not succumb to this wearying spirit [13:57]. Perseverance and active love are our weapons.

The Path to Victory

How do we combat these relentless foes? The path to victory lies in unwavering resistance fueled by prayer and strict obedience to God's Holy Word [14:37]. We must actively engage in spiritual warfare, submitting to God, resisting the devil, and watching him flee.

Let us stand firm, fight the good fight for our marriages, and trust in the God who ordained this sacred institution. Let us pray for strength, wisdom, and deliverance for every marriage facing these intense spiritual attacks [17:14]. You can rebuke these spirits from your marriage right now: In the Name of Jesus, I come against the spirit of whoredoms, confusion, and slothfulness attacking my marriage. I drive them out of my home in Jesus Name. I receive love, joy, peace, and unity in my marital union in Jesus Name.
